Tip $16.00 · Total $96.00
Each person pays$24.00
Tip per person$4.00

How it works

  1. Enter the bill amount.
  2. Choose a tip percentage — 15%, 18%, 20% or your own.
  3. Set how many people are splitting the bill to see what each person pays.

Formula

Tip = Bill × Tip % • Total = Bill + Tip • Per person = Total ÷ Number of people

Worked example

On an $80 bill with a 20% tip, the tip is $16 and the total is $96. Split between 4 people, each person pays $24.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip at a restaurant?

In the USA, 15–20% is standard for good service, and 20% is common. In the UK, 10–15% is usual when service is not already included. Check the bill first — service may already be added.

How do I calculate a 20% tip?

Multiply the bill by 0.20. On an $80 bill, 20% is $16. A quick trick: move the decimal one place left for 10%, then double it.

How do I split a bill between friends?

Add the tip to the bill, then divide the total by the number of people. The calculator above does this for you.

Do you tip on tax?

Most people tip on the pre-tax amount, since tax is not part of the service. Tipping on the total including tax is also common and is a little more generous.

What is a good tip percentage in the USA?

15% is a normal tip, 18–20% is good service, and 25% or more is for outstanding service. For takeaway, 10% is common.

Should I tip on a takeaway order?

It is not expected in the same way as table service, but 10% is a kind gesture, especially for large or complicated orders.
